The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch

A post-WWII, 20th century epic in which charismatic characters engage in lifetimes of the ultimate religious-metaphysical debate. The title frames the entire story. Wickedly funny, dark, vivid, sexy, dramatic, melodramatic and utterly consuming. The English translation is sometimes wonky, but Mulisch’s brilliance and gorgeous writing shines through. Mulisch was a prolific writer from the Netherlands probably best known outside his own country for his novel The Assault (also a must-read).
