I have two books for you – one purely for entertainment and the other that has had a profound effect on me.

The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett

The Color of Magic is the first book in a series by Terry Pratchett.  Terry Pratchett creates the world of Discworld, a place where nonsensical to us makes perfect sense to the characters and things that shouldn’t work somehow do.  It is a world of magic, dwarves, assassins, thieves, humans and trolls.  Pratchett creates colorful characters who are put into impossible situations and somehow come out ahead – in one way or another. The books in this series, which can really be read in any order, are imaginative, humorous and great for a quick, light read.

Modern Slavery by Kevin Bales

After reading this book my thinking has been transformed.  This book, written by one of the leaders in the Free the Slaves Movement, is about the slavery that still exists today.  It describes slavery as it existed historically and compares it to today’s slave.  Most importantly for me, it also gives solutions and ways that I can get involved to help bring people out of slavery across the globe.  This book has opened my eyes to a global crisis and has encouraged me to now take part in helping to end it.
